‘We’ll Stop Transporting Food’ – Truck Drivers Threaten Strike Over Rising Attacks

Protecting Food Supply Chain: Truck Drivers Threaten Strike Over Rising Attacks.

Truck drivers across the nation are on the brink of a potential strike due to the escalating attacks they endure while transporting essential food items. These attacks, predominantly targeting trucks and warehouses, have become a growing concern for the industry.

Yusuf Othman, the National President of the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners, voiced their grievances, highlighting the significant impact of these attacks on their operations. He emphasized the inadequacy of insurance coverage against such incidents, leaving them vulnerable to financial losses.

“In light of these ongoing attacks, we are compelled to reevaluate our services,” stated Othman. “If these security challenges persist, we may have no choice but to halt the transportation of food items altogether.”

Othman stressed the potential repercussions of such a decision, warning of imminent food scarcity across the country if the safety of truck drivers and their cargo isn’t guaranteed. He urged the public to refrain from engaging in acts of violence against their trucks, emphasizing the critical role they play in maintaining the food supply chain.

“With the looming threat of attacks, transporting food becomes increasingly precarious,” Othman explained. “If a truck carrying essential food items is looted en route, the consequences for the entire nation could be dire.”

The looming strike underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures to safeguard the transportation of food items and preserve food security nationwide. It is imperative that stakeholders collaborate to address these security challenges and ensure the uninterrupted flow of essential goods across the country.
